Yoshiyuki’s tenugui are crafted using a traditional Japanese dyeing technique called chusen, which is officially recognized as a traditional craft of Tokyo. Every step of the production process─from stencil-making to dyeing, rinsing, and final folding─is done entirely by hand at a dye workshop in Tokyo’s downtown area by skilled artisans. From the initial paste application through to the finishing touches, nothing is automated. The result is a uniquely handcrafted texture that simply cannot be replicated by machines─a hallmark of quality and authenticity.
The featured design, Kumibishi (linked diamonds), is a geometric pattern formed by connecting diamond-shaped motifs known as hishi mon, which have long been cherished in Japan as auspicious symbols. Traditionally associated with well-being and prosperity, the endlessly repeating diamond pattern embodies a deep wish for “eternal continuity.”
