Yoshiyuki’s tenugui are crafted using a traditional Japanese dyeing technique called chusen, which is officially recognized as a traditional craft of Tokyo. Every step of the production process─from stencil-making to dyeing, rinsing, and final folding─is done entirely by hand at a dye workshop in Tokyo’s downtown area by skilled artisans. From the initial paste application through to the finishing touches, nothing is automated. The result is a uniquely handcrafted texture that simply cannot be replicated by machines─a hallmark of quality and authenticity.
The featured design, “Hishi Seigaiha” pattern is a traditional auspicious motif that combines hishi -a diamond-shaped design symbolizing vitality- with seigaiha, which depicts gentle waves stretching endlessly into the distance. The repeating rhythm of diamonds and waves captures a contrast of qualities: strength infused with serenity, and calmness anchored by inner resolve. Woven into this design is a heartfelt wish for health, prosperity, and a long, peaceful passage of time.
